The problem was my screen was "locking" too quickly, even though the watch itself wasn't locked. Here's how I fixed it: Open Watch app on iPhone. Go to General; Go to Wake Screen; Chang "On Tap" to Wake for 70 seconds. Let screen "lock" then wake it by tapping. Quickly check the box "Use Your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac" That's it.
